National ADSA-SAD

During the summer, members are able to attend the American Dairy
Science Association-Student Affiliate
Division Conference. The conference helps members meet and interact with
others from around the country.
During the convention, members tour local attractions and farms, attend
meetings, symposia, oral presentations,
a career fair and leadership building events. The students can also compete
with other members from around the
country in dairy quiz bowl and other competitions. The conference is held
in conjunction with the parent
organizations convention allowing students to visit with dairy companies
and make contacts in the dairy industry.
Fall Picnic

Fall Picnic is the first major event of the year. The club comes together
to good food, good company and hopefully
good weather. The club provides hamburgers and hot dogs and club members
bring sides and deserts for
everyone to enjoy. The picnic allows the club members to come together
and get reacquainted after the long summer.
The picnic also allows the club members to meet and get to know this year's
pledges.
Dairy Judging Teams

The Dairy Club strongly encourages club members to be a member
of the dairy judging teams. As a member of
the teams, members build a knowledge of dairy conformation that can benefit
them in the dairy industry. Also,
judging builds confidence and public speaking skills in students. The
members of the teams compete at the Eastern
States Exposition, All-American Dairy Show, world Dairy Expo and North
American International Livestock
Expo as well as practicing at several dairy farms on the eastern coast.
Through all of this practice, students have
the opportunity to meet and interact with other students and prominent
dairymen around the country.
Showcase Sale of Virginia Tech

The Showcase Sale has become one of the club's biggest events of the year.
The club members work to
secure consignments from breeders around the country and the organize
the catalog and advertise the sale with
the goal of teaching club members more about dairy cattle marketing. Additionally,
in December 2008, the club
will be holding its first live Showcase Sale with the hope of teaching
club members more about managing and
preparing cattle for a dairy cattle sale.
Service Projects

The club is very involved in the community at Virginia Tech.
we believe that giving back to the community that has
given us so much is a crucial action so we are very involved in service
projects around Blacksburg and Southwest
Virginia. Each year, the club is involved in Relay for Life, Adopt-a-Highway,
Ag-tober Fest, 4th Grade
Experience and the Big Event, a university wide service project to beautify
the community. The club works hard
to be involved in the community and educate youth about the dairy industry
and where food comes from.
Recruiting Day

The Department's Recruiting day is held each October to allow
prospective students the opportunity to visit the
college and experience the program. Students help make the day a memorable
event by organizing lunch, helping
run mock classes and giving campus and farm tours. Club members are always
willing to host prospective students
for the night to give them a full college experience.
Milkshake Sales

Milkshake Sales are the biggest fundraiser for the club during
the school year. Club members take shifts to sell
milkshakes to consumers at football and basketball games, commencement
and the Virginia State Fair. Dairy
Club Milkshakes are well known around the state of Virginia because of
the hardwork of our club member making
the sales a big success. Thank you to our 2007 milkshake coordinator Jordan
Margason and the 2007 milkshake
chairs Sherry Albaugh, Curtis Rhoderick, Kellie Tatum and Dale Flugal
and good luck to next year's chairs.
Southern ADSA

The Southern ADSA-SAD Conference gives Dairy Club members another
opportunity to travel and meet
other students at Universities in the Southern region. Each year the conference
is hosted by another university in
the region which allows students to visit new attractions and have new
experiences each year. Club members also
have the chance to compete in the paper presentation, dairy quiz bowl
and other competitions. Congratulations to the Dairy
Club on being named Outstanding Chapter at the 2008 Southern ADSA-SAD
Conference.
Spring Trip

Each spring, the Dairy Club takes a trip to a different part
of the country to learn more about dairying.
By visiting dairy farms, members learn more about progressive dairying
techniques and facilities that help
students planning to build or upgrade an existing dairy. Also, visiting
dairy companies helps students planning
to enter other parts of the industry prepare and make contacts for their
future. The club also finds time to visit
tourist attractions and bond as a club. Also, since this year's trip took
us to Kentucky, it seemed only fair to
visit Winstar Farm (pictured above), breeder of several Kentucky Derby
winners.
Little All-American

The Little All-American Show is the Dairy Club's annual fitting
and showmanship contest. With two divisions,
novice and experienced, the show is open to all university students. Students
use the two weeks prior to the show
to teach their heifers to lead, fit the heifers for the show and enjoy
each other's company. It is a great opportunity
to meet all the club members and other participants as experienced showman
prepare their animals together and
help novices learn the basics to fitting and showmanship. The show also
provides an excellent outlet for students to
interact with college alumni.
Social Events

Dairy Club members love to get together and socialize with each other
throughout the year. For that reason, the
club spends a lot of time together at different social activities. The
club is active in intramural sport at the university
competing in soccer, volleyball, flag football, bowling, and softball
and last year took 3rd place in the university wide
race for the Hokie Grail, Overall Intramural Sports Championship. The
club also regularly schedules picnics and
camping trips as well as hosting dinners, football tailgates, go-carting,
mini golf and hikes to the cascades.
